Hauling Tips:
New haulers are popping up all of the time.  And, to compete with established haulers, they offer really low rates, say that they'll beat or match any price, or offer frequent hauler miles. Don't be fooled by the cheap prices!  If it seems too good to be true, it probably is! To protect yourself and your horse, here are some basic guidelines to follow when choosing a hauler;

  • Ask for proof of commercial transport insurance and correct vehicle licensing
  • Ask for proof of truck and trailer maintenance.  Even new equipment must be regularly maintained when used commercially
  • Ask for their safety inspection sheets and procedures.  Are they up to standard?
  • Ask for a recent drivers abstract (within the past 30 days), to make sure the driver has a clean record
  • Ask for recent references!  Get at least 3 of them and follow through!  Ask lots of questions and verify that you are speaking with actual clients and not just friends of the hauler.
  • Don't risk leaving your horse on the trailer overnight!  For distance hauls that require a layover, the hauler should make the overnight arrangements.  Get the name of the Stable that they have booked and contact them directly to be sure that a stall has been reserved for your horse.  Have the Stable contact you when your horse has arrived so that you can ask them questions about your horse's condition.
  • What's the condition of the trailer?  If the fenders are all banged up, that's likely because they can't back it up!  Pay close attention...can they back up their rig like a pro?
  • Finally, your hauler should be a 'horse' person. If they appear nervous around horses or too frightened to load your horse onto the trailer, then they shouldn't be hauling!  If the hauler behaves this way then you shouldn't let them take your horse away!  Don't learn the hard way! Let your instincts guide you.

And always keep in mind...you get what you pay for!
