Hauling Tips:
To protect yourself and your horse, here are some basic guidelines to follow when choosing a hauler;
- Ask for proof of commercial transport insurance. If your hauler goes outside of BC, for example, into Alberta or the USA, then they must be insured accordingly.
- Is your hauler's truck insured commercially or for business use? There is a huge difference!
- Ask for proof of truck and trailer maintenance. Even new equipment must be regularly maintained when used commercially. And, look for the inspection stickers on their truck and trailer! NO sticker means that they have not been commercially inspected!!
- Ask for their daily inspection sheets and procedures.
- Ask for recent references! Get at least 3 of them and follow through! Ask lots of questions and verify that you are speaking with actual clients and not just friends of the hauler. Don't just go by what a hauler has posted on their website. Speak to actual people about your hauler!
- Don't risk leaving your horse on the trailer overnight! For distance hauls that require a layover, the hauler should make the overnight arrangements. Get the name of the Stable that they have booked and contact them directly to be sure that a stall has been reserved for your horse.
- What's the condition of the transport truck & trailer? If the trailer fenders are all banged up, that's likely because they can't back it up! Pay close attention...can they back up their rig like a pro?
- Your hauler should be a 'horse' person. If they appear nervous around horses or too frightened to load your horse onto the trailer, then they shouldn't be hauling!
- Finally, don't send your horse with an aggressive hauler! If they try to whip your horse or winch them onto the trailer, then you're not dealing with a pro!
Keep in mind...you get what you pay for!
